If you’re anything like me and pop culture, you’re Charlie Sheen-ed out. But the Star-Ledger had an interesting column yesterday: What, if anything, can we learn from his mishaps?
– We can all get distracted. Sheen was distracted by activities beyond his career. The column points out that our comments don’t fade into oblivion any more — between Facebook, blogs and everything else, one out-of-place comment can remain to haunt us for a long time.
– Sheen learned he was expendable — like all of us are. Push the limits too far and we can find ourselves shown the door.
– We need to keep our emotions in check. Sheen wasn’t exactly politically correct in some of his recent comments and it’s come back to bite him. We need to do the same — avoid losing our tempers or otherwise let our emotions get the better of us. It’s much better to take a break and re-assess the situation later.
– Don’t apologize if you don’t mean it. People know the difference between a genuine and a fake apology.
– Take responsibility for your actions. If you made the mistake — or the inappropriate comments, or whatever — own up to them.
What other lessons can we learn from this?
