In Mercer County, the cold winter is starting to seep into the bricks and mortar of many local businesses. Has it hit yours?
The impact was recently covered by the Times of Trenton. Reporter Bridget Clerkin noted that as the snow falls, so has business, and this winter has been rough on local business – including the mechanics at Selman’s Shell Gas Station on Whitehorse Road in Trenton.
With a reported seven significant snowfalls so far this winter, most companies can do little more than keep the roads and driveways clear and hope customers will keep coming in. But blizzard conditions tend to keep residents home-bound.
According to the story:
In Robbinsville, Lee Paroly has experienced similar problems. Paroly, owner of the Friendly’s restaurant in the Foxmoor Shopping Center, said this is the toughest winter the eatery has had in a long time.
“We’re all out there trying to find a way to bring people in, just because of the poor economy itself. This kind of winter adds even more of a negative aspect,” Paroly said.
On several occasions, Paroly said, he has either had to close the restaurant early, open it late, or not open it at all, not only because customers didn’t want to risk making a dangerous trip, but also because he was worried about his staff driving. Last week alone, snow and icy roads caused one death and one serious car accident as well as closed roads, the suspension of several bus routes, the downing of 22 trees, and an electrical fire.
The weather is due to be decidedly milder today – abut 53 degrees for a high – and mild throughout the week. Perhaps we’ve turned a corner?
