In New Jersey, a statewide tax program that encourages businesses to invest in low and moderate income neighborhoods could be a life-saver for the Camden-based Kroc Center, a Salvation Army community center coming to the area.
Thanks to the Department of Community Affairs Neighborhood Revitalization Program, New Jersey American Water was able to invest a considerable donation – $800,000 – in the community center, and receive a 100 percent tax credit in return. Talk about a win-win.
The Kroc Center is a planned 120,00 square foot facility that will provide both indoor and outdoor recreational programs to the Camden community. It’s a major step toward revitalization, leadership development, and an opportunity available to businesses throughout the state.
According to All Business New Jersey – which reported the story today:
“A tremendous amount of good can come from this unique program when the corporate community gets involved,” said DCA Commissioner Lori Grifa.
The tax credit program has been in existence since 2003. Since that time, the DCA has approved 29 grants to help 24 neighborhood revitalization plans in 14 cities. In total, more than $22 million has been invested in the revitalization plans via the program.
